Is it a Myth that wild chiltepin plants can live for up to 40 -50 years ? Going thru old pictures i found these ones , they shade a little light to the answer , well at list half the answer . These pictures show a dead mature Chiltepin plant (4 to 6 years old ) , we can not be sure how many years it stayed dead , we can also see the dead stalks of two other plants , produced years after the mother plant died , we can also see a new plant growing from the sane Rhizo...me like root structure , Why we say it is a new plant ? Wild Chiltepin plants have a growth memory , if the plants trunk stays alive (sometimes only a few inches of trunk do not dry up) and If rains are present and enough , the plant will grow back into the same size and shape the previous one had. These new plants produced from the roots show a diferent growth patern . so we can have a plant present for many years in the same spot where a Mother plant has died , this happens at drought prone locations , At locations where a good amount of humidity is presemt througtout the year Chiltepin plants do not dry up and tend to grow biger every year , we can easily find 20 plus year old plants there , further studies may be neded in order to find out if they are able to live up to 50 years See more
