We're really looking forward to the great conversations we're going to have at our upcoming Lewis MacAdams Prize workshop If you want to know more about the co...mpetition, if you have questions or if you want to see what the 2020 entries and winners looked like, then come to this workshop. We'll talk about our theme Represent the River: Word & Image, we'll discuss public art, how the written word is integrated into art, we'll do some creative visualizations and writing exercises. This is your opportunity to ask questions, get information and inspiration about the Lewis MacAdams Prize so you can submit your proposal for public art along the LA River. You must register via EventBrite to receive the Zoom link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/155736605379 #freeworkshop #lewismacadamsprize #eventbrite #losangeles
That novel you’ve been writing foreveror intending to start. The short story that just needs a bit more work before submissionor a story you’ve had in mind. Poetry and diplomacy
I haven't said much about my most recent book because it was released in May 2020, 3 days before George Floyd was murdered, and there was so much to rage about,... talk about, think about, feel stunned about, grieve about, that I couldn't even. The book was just a book, like a million other books. It mattered not in the least. But now that the world is rousing itself and preparing to open itself up, so is the bullshit pressure about improving ourselves for re-entry. Like cockroaches, the self-improvement racket never dies. Like noxious weeds, I see them springing up all over the place -- the advice columns, wellness features, influencer twaddle-posts. How to "re-enter" mindfully. How to be productive and organized upon re-entry. New skin care regimes for the lower half of your face. New completely ridiculous work-out classes (those skinny jeans are lying in wait, friend) that are guaranteed not only to make you vomit, but also sob (if you're not sobbing by the 3rd set of burpees, you're not improving.) I'm as annoyed by all this as I was back in the Before when I wrote the book. For the love of everything we've endured, let's not fall back into our old bad habits, of thinking that no matter what, we should always be trying to improve ourselves. Respect what you've endured. Look at you! Look at what you've survived. You are a wonder to behold. As is the bottom of your face.
