Deforestation in Michoacán is a serious issue since we are losing our forests at an alarming rate. Several groups are trying to stop this. Many ex-pats do not have fireplaces or fire pits in order to stop the destruction of this natural resource. Indigenous communities depend on wood for warmth, cooking, and making their crafts. Also, between 14,800 and 19,800 acres of deforestation for avocado orchards occur each year in Michoacan. The La Cruz Habitat Protection Projec...t and American Forests are trying to stop the rampant deforestation in the wintering grounds of monarch butterflies. Loss of forest was putting the entire annual monarch migration phenomenon at risk. And not only is it continuing unabated; it was accelerating. The unique migration of North American monarchs is gravely threatened by loss of habitat across all of its range, which includes the U.S. and southern Canada.
