I started my photography business while living in Mexico City. Almost everyday I would walk the streets of Mexico City with my camera taking pictures of everything that caught my attention. Locals would often come up to me assuming I was a tourist and ask me how I enjoyed their city. I would then share my images and stories with others, and became a vessel of truth regarding what life was really like for a Black woman living in Mexico. I realized my story wasn’t unique, ...I was just intentional about capturing moments. I then wondered how cool it would be to capture other Black women out and about exploring this city. At first I started capturing my close friends, and gradually Black women on vacation in Mexico City started hiring me to capture them while out and about exploring the city. My passion for documentary and street photography was now my business. 3 days before leaving Mexico and 4 days before my 46th birthday, I decided to give myself an early birthday present. I wanted something meaningful that represented me fully. So after talking to the amazing tattoo artist @zep_avila_lopez he created this image for me. The hummingbird represents spirituality, strength and agility to move from one place to another. This is so my life. Plus I’m fascinated by them. And the compass represents trips around the world, as I am an avid global traveler. Last year I shared this list of life lessons I wrote for my daughters and other young women I adore. Will I’ve decided for every birthday I’d add at least 2-3 more lessons. 1. Give yourself permission to outgrow people. 2. Spend time with people and on things that matter most to you.... 3. Be receptive to hearing I’m sorry. 4. Don’t be afraid to share your story, just know everybody doesn’t need to KNOW your story. 5. Never apologize for your TRUE story. 6. Be selective where you lend your voice and your energy. 7. Good people will always show up. You don’t have to seek them out. 8. Not everyone was raised to be a decent human. It’s not your job to try and change them. It’s your job to NOT be like them. 9. Doing what is RIGHT is NEVER wrong. 10. Say NO more. 11. Move in silence. Everybody doesn’t have to know what moves you’re making. 12. I found MY voice when I needed my daughters to KNOW theirs. 13. Never forget to be gentle with yourself. 14. Everything isn’t deserving of a response. 15. Love YOU well.
