June 1, Navy Day (Día de la Marina). A Mexican National event since 1942, it's held in memory of those that June 1, 1917, sailed out in the ship "Tabasco" in Ve...racruz, the first Mexican merchant ship. This day, in all Mexican harbors, they honor the sailors that have lost their lives on duty, not only in battle, but all activities related to the sea. The event is mainly held at sea with all the city's Navy ships in an offshore parade, the captains lay wreaths of flowers in honor of all sailors who've lost their lives. They are followed by tour boats and fishermen that then hold a ceremony to honor navy personnel. All fishermen in the area also hold their own special celebrations in their towns. Navy Day was established by the fact that on June 1, 1917, a Mexican merchant ship, the "Tabasco" steamer, departed from the port of Veracruz for the first time, with the total crew consisting of Mexicans by birth and under the command of Captain Rafael Izaguirre; the first crossing was to Progreso, Yucatán. This happened in compliance with Article 32 of the Constitution promulgated on February 5 of that same year. Before, the captains, heads of machines and officers of the Mexican ships were all foreigners. 2.- When it was celebrated for the first time The first occasion on the Navy Day was on June 1, 1942, which served to honor the crews of the Mexican tanks "Potrero del Llano" and "Faja de Oro", which were sunk by German submarines. on May 13 and 20 of that year, during World War II. This celebration is currently led by the President of the Republic aboard an Armada ship, where an evocation of sailors who have fallen in the line of duty is read and a floral offering is thrown into the sea. In fact, although people associate the celebration with the Navy, the truth is that the date was instituted by the then President of the Republic, General Manuel Ávila Camacho, to pay homage to all the people who carry out some activity at sea, such as merchant seamen, fishermen, tourism service providers and those who carry out oil extraction in the sea, as well as members of the Secretariat of Navy-Navy of Mexico, who provide security and protection in our seas to boost the national maritime development. By the way, in 1991 it was established by presidential decree on November 23 as the Day of the Navy of Mexico, in commemoration of the heroic deed of Frigate Captain Pedro Sainz de Baranda. See more
