Nestled in the heart of the Lacandon Jungle, in the Lacanha river valley, a few kilometers from the border with Guatemala, lie the vestiges of this important Mayan city, whose apogee occurred in the Late Classic (600-800 AD). Compared to other sites in the area, such as Yaxchilan and Palenque, Bonampak (painted walls) is small in size, occupying only 4 square meters. The Great Plaza and the Acropolis stand out from the complex. In the first, several stelae are raised with representations of characters, perhaps rulers of the place, wearing elaborate attire.
