In a remote fishing community in Mahahual, Mexico, there is unexpected human-wildlife conflict between four typically unrelated species: humans, jaguars, dogs, ...and sea turtles. Over the years, the fishermen’s companion dogs began roaming free at night, ultimately causing an unintentional ripple effect. As they explored, they would either dig up the nests of the sea turtles or prey upon the turtles themselves. Since the turtles are natural prey to the local jaguars, jaguars would also be drawn out at night in search of food. With fewer sea turtles on the beach, the jaguars would set their sights on the dogs themselves, also an easy prey for the largest predator in America. While hunting the dogs, the jaguars were also venturing closer and closer to the fishermen's community and homes. IFAW stepped in to help. As part of Casitas Azules, a project that incorporates a holistic approach to jaguar conservation, IFAW provided raw materials for the local organization, Proyecto AAk Mahahual A.C, to build humane dog pens to prevent pets from roaming at night with the intention to transform conflict into Coexistence between the four species. IFAW and Coco’s Animal Welfare ventured out to set up a temporary 5-day wellness clinic 200 miles away to deworm, vaccinate, sterilize, and provide overall health care for the local dogs and cats. The vaccination is not only important for the pets themselves, but also means the pets are less likely to transmit diseases to other wild animals, including the jaguars.
