Welcome to the marvelous Cow Pea (Vigna unguiculata) as we know of it in America. If you are not familiar with the term Cowpea then perhaps the name Black Eye p...ea may sound familiar. Snubbed as a Poor mans food or Meat for poorer people or only suitable as Livestock feed hence the name Cow Pea ... this Ancient Legume has been grown by Africans before antiquity. With approximately 25% protein and all the essential branch chain amino acids, carbohydrates and fats this was essentially the secret food of Captive enslaved Africans. Had President George Washington knew his Captive Slaves Subsisted on Cow Peas or Pease as he referred to them he would have had a fit. After all it was him and his team who believed that Tomatoes were poisonous. I just wonder how long the Captive Slaves hid behind ole shanty shacks snickering about these healthy foods that everyone thought were not edible. We do know that in the south the confederate soldiers carried Cow Peas in their satchels and rumour has it that union soldiers left fields of cowpeas intact that caused many poor whites and enslaved Africans to survive over winter. It’s no wonder that Southern Tradition is deeply entrenched with eating Black eyed peas, Collards and cornbread for New Years as a display to garner good luck. Variations of the cow pea can be seen through out Asia with the Thai long bean and Asparagus long bean. Many Southerners love Crowder varieties where it appears as though the peas crowd together in the pod... some of the most well known varieties are purple hull, lady and zippers that can be found all through the south. At Comfort Farms we scored some of the OGs from Africa... Specifically from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt , The Congo and from our most endeared Geechie/Gullah culture here in the states Sapelo Island off the coast of Georgia. It’s important for us to preserve history... because... if seeds can tell a story... what stories would they tell. #indegenous #seeds #rareseeds #foodandmusic #georgia #cowpea #africa #southernfoodways #history

"Bees will take their nutrients from anything which has sugar and moisture. Feeding them watermelon if conditions are tough is a good idea because it’s got plenty of fructose and moisture! The photo and information is from Heather Harvey, a park ranger with the National Park Service."
