BRETT STOCKER - THE PROCESS OF BUILDING A SANDCASTLE. Looking at photos of the incredible range of sandcastles that Brett Stocker has built over his career as ...a world champion, I wondered how the project goes from an idea to the creation of the final sand sculpture. Having the opportunity to talk with Brett and watch one of this latest projects, I was able to gain a few insights. First, the sand itself is key to the building process. In many cases, the beaches of Los Cabos have sand that is too fine and too filled with shell fragments to hold together when wet and last the desired length of time to display the sculpture. In this case, Brett actually cleans and sifts sand from his property in Santa Anita and brings some of this sand with him to the project. Building a good base where the castle will be created is also important. On his first trip out to Vida Soul in Las Vinoramas, Brett said that he was going out to pound sand. At the time, I didn't understand that this is exactly what he meant. Building the base requires you to pound the sand into as hard and stable a base as possible to ensure that it doesn't erode or collapse under the weight of the structure to be created above it. How does he get the shapes that he wants? As you can see in the first round of pictures, tubes are created in the different sizes and shapes that are desired for the rounded portions of the castle. The wet sand ais placed inside these tubes and allowed to dry. The tubes are kept in shape with bands. The tubes are carefully removed and any excess sand is carefully brushed or scraped away. As you can see, the devil is in the details. Unlike the sand castles that we used to build on the beach or in sand boxes at home when I was young, Brett is not satisfied with an unfinished look to the towers. His sand castles show the individual blocks of stone used to build the castle, the windows, turrets and even the vines that may be growing up the side of the castle. From the round or square portions, Brett actually carves and sculpts the sand to get the features of his design. Look closely at all of the intricate detail that is included in the photos at each stage of the process. The final stage in the creation is to place the title or logo on the front of the sand castle. In this case, the logo of Vida Soul, the boutique hotel in Boca Las Vinorama, owned by Joan Hafenecker. The last thing that is done is that the complete sculpture is sprayed with diluted Elmers glue as a wind shield. Vida Soul is where it is hoped that the 9th annual sand castle building contest will still be able to occur on May 3rd, if the lockdown is over. How long did this creation take? Beyond the visualization and plans, Brett made six trips to Vida Soul and spent about four hours each time working on it. Even if the contest doesn't end up happening or the planned date, it is worth a drive down the East Cape road or Palo Escopeta to Vida Soul to take a look at this work of sand art.
