Many instrument procedures, such as ILS approaches, allow you to fly your airplane very close to the ground while in clouds. When the decision altitude or decision height is as low as 100 to 200 feet above the ground, it is particularly critical to know the approach procedure and make sure that your altimeter is indicating correctly. Here are some tips on how to fly down to minimums while keeping it safe. ALTITUDE VERIFICATION: A great way to ensure that your altimeter settin...g is accurate is to verify that your altitude is 2,400 msl at PARCL, as long as you are accurately tracking the glideslope. KNOW THE MISSED APPROACH: The likelihood of having to go missed when the cloud coverage is near minimums for the approach is high. In this case, you may be flying a nonstandard hold using left turns after a fairly complex missed-approach procedure. Are you ready? CHECK THE MISSED APPROACH POINT: On an ILS, the missed approach point is the decision altitude, in this case 680 feet msl, which is only 200 feet agl. If you’re flying the LOC only, your missed approach point is slightly beyond HOSTO, which can be identified by a VOR intercept, DME or radar. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SEE?: To continue your descent below the DA or MDA, you have to see the runway environment. This airport has ALSF-1A, an approach lighting system with sequenced flashing lights, and a precision approach path indicator to help you find the runway. HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?: If you can’t capture the glideslope, either because it isn’t functioning or because your receiver is incapable, the procedure can be flown as a localizer approach with step-downs. However, the minimum altitude goes from the 680-foot DA to 820 or 1,380 feet, depending on whether you can identify HOSTO.
