A lot of vaccine news coming out around the world! While we are not fans of data by press release, we are racing against the clock, so that is what we have at... the moment. Other than Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Oxford-AstraZeneca, none of the vaccine data we are sharing here have been published or peer-reviewed. These are also not final datasets. Novavax announced data from the U.K. phase 3 trial and a small phase 2b trial in South Africa. Their U.S. trial is still underway. Johnson & Johnson announced efficacy data of their single dose arm of the phase 3 trial but not their two-dose arm. We want to be clear: all of these vaccines have potential. At the beginning of the race to develop COVID-19 vaccines, FDA stated they would consider any safe candidates that demonstrated efficacy greater than 50%. Some have voiced disappointment about the 66% combined efficacy (range 57% 72%) of the J&J vaccine, but it has advantages: it is a single dose and is fridge stable. This addresses substantial challenges with distribution, supply, and administration. It also has impressive efficacy for preventing severe illness (85%). The same goes with some of the other vaccines: with less stringent storage requirements, underserved communities, rural areas, and developing countries can have access to vaccines that prevent symptomatic and severe illness. We are in a GLOBAL pandemic and have to address it collectively. Having multiple vaccines that are safe and effective reduces the risk of demand overwhelming a single manufacturer, and these companies can work together to address global need. We are at over 2.2 million deaths globally due to COVID-19, and this will continue to climb. None of these vaccines are perfect; even the most effective ones have strict storage and delivery requirements which poses a challenge for many locales. We don’t have the benefit of waiting for the 100% effective, single-dose, stored in a fridge vaccine: that is a pipe dream. We have great options here, and they all will need to be deployed around the world in order to stamp out the pandemic, especially in the presence of these new variants that pose an ongoing challenge.
