A note from our neighbour on the coast If any of you can help out our little town is in need Dear neighbors, Usually at this time of year we are in the middle of organizing the Christmas party for the children of Xcalak. Unfortunately, because of the coronavirus pandemic, we are unable to host the annual party. Without our help, it is likely that most children in Xcalak will receive no Christmas presents this year. For this reason Alexis and Peter, Frank and Sherry, and Eli...zabeth and I have undertaken a gift drive for the children. As you are all aware, the Costa Maya Ministries of the Iglesia Cruz de Cristo in Mahahual has, through your outstanding generosity and that of many others, been providing food dispensas for the past several months. It is impossible to exaggerate the level of gratitude that the people of Xcalak feel toward those who have given so much to help them in this terrible time. We who are organizing this gift drive understand that for many of us these are hard times and that many of you have given a lot already. We do not want any donation that you might make to the Christmas gift drive to affect the amount of your donation for the food dispensas, which must remain the number one priority. In previous years our parties for the children were lighthearted affairs focusing on small gifts, pinatas, and a chance to meet Santa Claus. But this year there is a great need for the simplest necessities of life, things such as medicines, clothing (outer and inner garments), shoes, items of personal hygiene (e.g., toothbrushes and toothpaste), and so forth. So our goal this year is to provide each child with gifts of necessity and a gift to delight. We have hired Liz Castro and Alicia Flores, whom many of you know from the Leaky Palapa, to canvass all the families in town to discover the most pressing need of every child in Xcalak. Our goal is to supply the gifts that best meet that need. This is not a small undertaking. For this reason, we are asking all of you to dig a little deeper this year so that these children, whose families have been made destitute by the pandemic, can have something approaching a normal Christmas. These gifts will be given to the parents to give to the children themselves. This will be a joy to the parents because it puts them in a position of giving to their kids. We do not want the children to know that the gifts came from anyone but their parents. We aim to have all the gifts purchased and ready to deliver by December 22. As everyone has seen the Border between the USA and Canada remains closed until at least January 21. We have decided that we will not be opening the Leaky Palapa this season. We hope everyone stays save and has the best Christmas they can have during these crazy times. hope to see you all next season !!!
