One of the historical references portrayed in the second episode of Ulysses, Nestor, is that of the Stuart coins. As the page The Joyce Project describes, 'De...asy's "Stuart coins" are relics of a sorry period in Ireland's history: its invasion in 1688 by King James II of England. In 1689-90, after securing the allegiance of many of the Irish, James issued a series of new coins that were minted from base metals like copper and brass and debased the existing Irish currency'. According to the Gilbert schema, the "Art" of the "Nestor" episode is "History", a theme most memorably referenced by the famous line, History, Stephen said, is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake. Attached are images of the Stuart coins in question. For today’s episode, Lotus Eaters, we’d like to share with you Richard Hamilton’s work "Study for Leopold Bloom for James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’" (1948). This draw...ing illustrates the last paragraph of the episode, in which Mr. Bloom fancies himself naked, in a womb of warmth, oiled by scented melting soap, softly laved and pictures the dark tangled curls of his bush floating, floating hair of the stream around the limp father of thousands, a languid floating flower. Did you know that the venue of the "Joyce Without Borders - North American James Joyce Symposium 2019" is in the same neighborhood as the principal setting of t...he award-winning movie Roma (2018), directed and written by Alfonso Cuarón? Roma depicts the life of Cleo, a Mixteca young woman who works as a housemaid for a middle class family. It reflects some of the most relevant issues of late 20th-century Mexico City, such as social structures, political conflicts, and class privileges. Cuarón’s work has been praised for its cinematography, which depicts quotidian scenes in Colonia Roma.
