Fellow Islaholics, As many have said in previous posts, we know everyone is concerned about their beloved island. We who reside on Isla Mujeres, residents, immigrants and expats have come together to help as much as we can. We love our Isleños and the crisis here is real. The Coronavirus is having a profound effect on tourism in Isla and that is what supports the families here. Construction projects have halted and workers sent home, small locally owned hotels, all bars and m...ost restaurants are closed or will be soon which also means the fishermen have no one to sell to. Homes on the island aren’t being rented resulting in housekeeping, grounds keepers and property managers being without work. There are no unemployment benefits in Mexico available after a 30 period. Many residents here live daily as they have no refrigeration in their homes meaning what they earn in a day is what they use to purchase dinner. No income.....no dinner. We are all fortunate enough to enjoy Isla Mujeres. I know I speak for all of us when I say that one of the things we enjoy most about this island is the sense of community, how the Islenos go out of their way to make us feel as though we are a part of Isla Mujeres. This is a plea for the people of Isla Mujeres who live a very different reality from the lives most of us enjoy. We are a community and the larger community that has made us feel so welcome is in trouble. The average daily wage in Mexico, when there is work to be had, is $123.22 pesos per day, $4.94 USD at today’s exchange rate (24 March 2020). Per day, not per hour. A group of us on the island is banding together to support Feed Isla. We are simply a group of immigrants and expats who live here and want to help the neighbors we love. For $200 pesos we can put together a basket that will include 900g of beans, 900g of rice, 500g of lentils, 400g of oats, 3 cans of vegetables, 1 kilo of corn flour, 870 ml of oil, 3 packs of pasta, 1.1 liters vinegar, 2 soaps and a pack of vitamin C. That is approximately $8.00 US dollars, yes $8.00, we can feed a family for one week. We are in desperate, we would not be asking for your donations if we weren’t!
