Next Leonardo da Vinci yesterday, we celebrate another birthday today with Elisabeth-Louise Vigée Lebrun, born on April 16, 1755. Painted in 1780 and presen...ted at the 1783 Salon, this work entitled "Peace Bringing Back Abundance" allowed the artist to be received at the French Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. On the right, we recognize Peace holding an olive branch, on the left Abundance presents ears of wheat with one hand and a cornucopia of fruit with the other. The allegorical subject is related to history painting, the noblest in the hierarchy of genres set by the Académie. Elisabeth-Louise Vigée Le Brun thus broke free from the tradition. She had a remarkable career as a painter: portraitist of Queen Marie-Antoinette (1774-1793), her success allowed her to emancipate herself from male tutelage and to live from her art. - RMN - Grand Palais (Musée du Louvre) / Philippe Fuzeau

Today, we celebrate Leonardo da Vinci’s anniversary, born on April 15, 1452. On this occasion, we would like to share with you one of the five paintings on di...splay at the Louvre : The Virgin of the Rocks. First picture Leonardo is known to have produced in Milan, this work, created between 1483 and 1486, celebrates the mystery of Incarnation in portrayals of the Virgin Mary, Christ and Saint John the Baptist. For the first time, the holy figures, bathed in a gentle light, are set in rocky landscape. A tender expression on her face, the Virgin Mary shelters the little John kneeling in front of Jesus under her mantle, while her other hand hovers above her son’s head. In his turn, the Child Jesus blesses the young saint, who, having recognized him as the Messiah, is already praying to him. Seemingly inviting us into the scene, the angel propping up Jesus completes this subtle interplay of hands. The figures’ natural poses and the omnipresence of the predominantly mineral landscape are highly innovative compared to the affected architecture and hieratic poses of the altarpieces of the period. The scene is bathed in a soft light, revealing the brilliantly executed texture of the protagonists’ skin, which Leonardo created using his signature chiaroscuro technique. - Musée du Louvre, dist.
