Researchers in our Botany Department are working on an exciting new conservation project in Baja California, which involves seed banking and collecting genetic ...material for some of the rarest plants on the peninsula. Drs. Sula Vanderplank and Jon Rebman will take expeditions to some of the most remote regions of the Baja California Peninsula to collect these seeds, with an additional focus on rare plants that occur on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border (some are featured in the photos here). The seeds will be stored in the Millennium Seed Bank at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in England, whose mission is to conserve 25% of the world’s plant species by 2020, aiming to provide an insurance policy against the extinction of plants in the wild. This project is an international collaboration between The Nat, San Diego Zoo Global, the Center for Plant Conservation, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and local collaborators.
