Ran across another drawing from when I first had formal training in art. This was a copy of a Kollwitz print I did as a study in a figure drawing and anatomy class with a professor who profoundly impacted my artistic development. . He was a cis gendered, middle aged "feminist" white dude who constantly accused me of misogyny and violence, often while so drunk he could barely function. At one point during a critique he said that a painting I had done of a tortured, mutilated,... feminine looking figure with a cock was in fact violence against women, not just a reprentation of it. . I asked for clarification. He said yes, this is not just a glorification of rape, it is rape. . I was horrified. Scared. Hurt. Embarrassed. And I didn't have the tools to fight back. . It never occurred to this white man, from his narrow place in the (1st) world, that I might be struggling to represent myself, to understand, explore and find pleasure in the complex violence done to my body; and that accusing a still coming-out queer immigrant of rape for doing a drawing was highly charged and echoed a dangerous history of racist rhetoric and action in the US. . It was this man's arrogance, condescension, power and abuse that forced me to learn how to fight back in an academic context. It was because of him and others like him that I dove into feminist, queer, decolonial, and postructuralist theory. . Today, I would know exactly how to respond. But I shouldn't have to. .
