SOCIAL DISTANCING HAS BEEN MAINTAINED AT GALERIA IZAMAL...between an incredibly spacious gallery and between two "drawers"/artists at Henry Vermillion´s´Life Drawing Group, Rhoda and Fernando --- no problem at all.
Off it goes to a collector in Miami Beach. El Campo en el Verano by Jeff Ferst. Thank you.
NEW SERIES: BOYSTOWN HENRY VERMILLION´S APRIL 2021 NEWSLETTER http://www.henryvermillion.com In some ways I think more like a writer than as a painter. This has complicated my life. If a new acquaintance asks what I do, my answer isI´m a painter, and so I am. Through my mind throughout the day, though, I wonder about politics, why people are what they are and not some other kind of person, and how grackles eat our dry dog food. I wonder what makes Mexicans different fro...m Americans. It´s not easy to translate such things into visual images, but I try, especially the human concerns. I appreciate artists who can accurately detail birds, plants and trees, but I´m not good at it. I have to stick with people. I´m now doing a series of drawings and paintings based on the Boystowns on the Mexican border. The photos I´m working from are gritty human documents, funny, sad, and very expressive. (By Boystown, think bordello, not Spencer Tracy. See more

A COMBINED EFFORT: BRITT We found this joint effort piece,"BRITT" in Henry´s old studio probably having been there the last 25 years. Might have been done in... Raleigh, NC. I was experimenting then with ink pours on canvas. Canvas isn´t a good support for ink work because the gesso invades the ink and dulls it making it opaque. That´s what I thought so after trying to texture it with plastic-I gave up and tossed it. I had plenty of money then and figured there were more materials where that came from! Henry - coming from his genteel poor background-fished it out of the trash and drew and painted on top of my pour. It was never finished but having found it now- it has a place in my studio - not a great piece but one full of memories of a time long ago - evidenced by the dark, straight hair and the young hand...oh - and no double chin! VACATION TIME for GALERIA IZAMAL: MAY 1 - JUNE 1. Please remember we are an artist co-op so each of the members has a key and will be delighted to open just fo...r you. We can even throw in a tequila to start the presentation off right! Contact the artist you are interested in - information on each of us is outside our door. TED DAVIS, one of our our photographer members has his office there and will probably open some. ELENA BACA (photographer) and JUAN CARLOS CAZARES (painter) do the outdoor shows on Saturdays and Sundays in Parque Juarez (The French Park). On those days, one of them might be at the open gallery and the other be in the Park. JAVIER GARCIA likes to paint at the gallery so you might find him doing a painting in progress. I´m "Mom" at the gallery (BRITT ZAIST) and I will use the time to make some renovations probably on Tuesdays and Fridays 11-2pm. If the door is closed then-just knock to come in. We´ll be happy to have you visit - otherwise just call us and set a time. See more
PUPPY CHOW IS FOR THE BIRDS ... and for the dogs, the cats, the ants---a win win all around! Our La Lejona home and it´s front gate to the garage has us putting... out food for what started to be only for the street dogs - which are in abundance here. The house has a huge two car garage (that we haven´t yet used for our car!). It´s become one of three places (gate/garage, patio fountain and upstairs bonsai roof garden) to sit and relax and do nothing! At the garage gate, we put out a plastic holder for puppy chow which we were told has more food value than the usual dog food for adults (as these streets dogs seem all full grown and need the extra nutrition). A bowl of water is alongside-especially important in this dry season. We have chairs and huge ferns now in the garage to sit and watch. It struck me odd that the puppy chow was being in some cases selectively eaten. All the little green pieces were being taken out. As soon as we began putting the puppy chow out-the pigeons stopped destroying Henry´s bonsai garden on the roof and appeared mainly downstairs eating the dog food! Then a male grackle appeared. It´s fun to watch him walk around on huge feet, hop up on the bowls, get a piece of dog food to swallow or dunk it in the water alongside to eat. I never thought how birds drink. This guy scoops the water in his beak and raises his head up so the water rolls back down. See the attachment here where years ago in Cuetzálan, Henry did a quick sketch of grackles looking at heaven on the top of a church. Another discovery: cats eat big bones and puppy chow! We´ve added bread and bird seed to the sidewalk buffet outside the gate and now everyone dines well - including the sparrows and the ants...leaving the patio fountain and roof garden alone. Now if the pigeons just didn´t poop on our car. They say it´s good luck - so we are very very lucky. See more
