What does shark conservation in New England have to do with clam chowder? Everything! Large shark populations along the East Coast of the United States have d...eclined more than 50% in the last fifteen years. These large sharks, such as the great white shark, perform a crucial role as top predators within their ocean ecosystem. During this same timeframe of decline, common prey of large sharks, including rays, skates and smaller sharks have increased significantly. One example of these increasing populations is the cownose ray, which migrates up and down the east coast eating bivalves: scallops, clams, oysters and most importantly for New Englanders, quahogs! Many consider Quahog clams to be the clam of choice for true Boston clam chowder. As Quahog clams become increasingly rare and subsequently more expensive, many restaurants are forced to switch to a different type of clam, and many traditionalists are taking ‘Chowdah’ off the menu! If you cherish your steaming bowl of chowder, you should also cherish our large shark friends that make it all possible! Luckily, it is not too late for sharks or clam chowder! There are many committed conservation groups in our area like Cape Cod National Seashore New England Aquarium Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, and Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at NEAQ that are fighting to preserve these amazing creatures and their habitats. By learning about local shark species and the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems, you too can be an advocate! What is something you can do to help protect sharks and conserve ocean ecosystems? #MarineMonday #QuahogClams #ClamChowder #BostonClamChowder #BostonClamChowder #SharkConservation #OceanConservation
