TEOTENANGO - PLACE OF THE DIVINE WALL Teotenango is an important archaeological site in the southern part of the Valley of Toluca, Mexico. Its name means "Place... of the Divine Wall" or "Sacred Wall" in Nahuatl. The site was first settled during the Teotihuacan period, in the early centuries of our era, but only achieved regional importance between 600 and 700 AD. Among the numerous structures are several stepped pyramids, a Mesoamerican ballcourt and various palaces and habitational areas located on terraces. The city was once protected by a 2 kilometers long wall, with a thickness of 1.5 meters and a height of up to 10 meters. There are also several carved monolithic sculptures, including the effigy of a jaguar with calendrical date signs, a pair of colossal serpent heads and a frog. Those portions of the ruins that have not been reconstructed show evidence of several different styles of construction. The earlier layers in particular show some very fine examples of mortarless stone construction. Although by no means megalithic (the largest stones only weight a few hundred kilograms), there is however a certain "cyclopean" character to some of the structures, whose masonry approaches in many places the polygonal style of stonework. The site museum contains numerous artefacts ranging from the Teotihuacan period to the Teotenanca and Matlazinca phase, down to the Aztec period. Among the most notable artefacts are several basalt sculptures, including a beautiful depiction of Quetzalcoatl, and a large collection of copper and bronze implements including chisels, axes and ornaments.
