Hello Dive Zihua friends! We have been for the last few weeks involved in several different projects that are all environmental or conservation in nature. We proud ourselves on having a great service but also informing our visitor friends of the state of our reefs and the need to protect them. Our conservation efforts culminated this weekend with an astonishing participation of our very dear marine biologists from La Paz that were responsible for the amazing projects as the ...well known Cabo Pulmo. We are very proud and happy to have learnt with them and shared this amazing experience, that we hope, in the near future will produce unbelievable positive results! The study made will be shared here for your information and there were many positive results and discoveries! As a conclusion the study found new species unknown to science, of several invertebrates, one fish, and a great variety of species, more even so than many really well know places in the protected Mexican Pacific, but alas, some really degraded places and a very low overall biomass. The final proposal is to create a marine fishing refuge that will not allow fishing in a very specific corridor outside Ixtapa, right in front of Sacramento. So all the Sacramento area and extending to Ixtapa shore and Morro tierra should be part of this refuge and be allowed to produce fish and repopulate the neighbouring areas to allow for fishing and hopefully amazing diving with increasing sizes. All of this could be accomplished in the next five years! We are now moving fast towards the creation of a NGO to allow us to access grants to enforce the protection on this area and reap benefits in the mid to long term. It's a major step towards having an even better Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo fishing and Scuba diving destination, without having to compromise the fishing activities so crucial for the area! Congratulations to all involved and thank you for allowing us, Dive Zihua, to participate in this study, special thanks to Claudia Yacuta and the Marine Biologist Carlos Sanchez Ortiz and his amazing team for their MAMMOTH effort and doing this study in such a rush and short time! For ever thankful!
