A few videos taken by various CIIV students carrying out fieldwork at Upper Montegrande last week.
A new data collection method. Any volunteers for Volcán de Colima?
Back in 2017 a list was presented in Wire. This time clearer criteria were used with some lesser known volcanoes making an appearance. There is only one volcano (Vesuvius) present in both lists. Taal might be proving itself to be a worthy contender at this very moment.
Recent overflight revealed similar temperatures both at the base of the crater and for the different fumarole fields.
Drone images taken on field trip to ground truth the path of a lava flow (images 2&3). This technique allows even more data to be collected in difficult to reach areas. Image one presents a Google Earth image of the studied lava flow and it's boundaries (shown in red), further defined by GPS points. ... #geologypage #geology #mexico #geologyfieldwork #volcanology #naturalhazards #internship @ Volcán de Colima See more
The city of Colima is rather vulnerable to storms!! #FoxNews
A recent trip with volunteers Kaier, Georgia and Jordan to the barrancas and forests on the slope of Volcán de Colima near La Joya to take spring samples and samples of the deposit to further investigate the 2015 pyroclastic density current.
On this weeks fieldwork we travelled to Upper Monte Grande. Collecting PDC samples, taking super elevation measurements and carrying out flyspec.
The Corona Virus is having an enormous impact worldwide and CIIV hasn't escaped. All the volunteers were advised to return home. Their departure has meant that for the first time since CIIV started in 2004, there are no volunteers in Colima. It will be difficult to get things going again, but we will do what we can. I hope everyone is staying safe and taking the appropriate precautions.
CIIV (Colima de Intercambio en Investigación en Vulcanología) is a volunteering/ internship program that gives participants experience working on active volcanoes of Mexico, principally, Volcán de Colima. Work at the centre includes the following: - Research - carry out research projects to improve our understanding of volcanic systems - Exchange - provide the opportunity for international students to assist with research projects based on active volcanoes. Facilitate the int...eraction between them and the students of Colima - Monitoring - improve the quality of monitoring of Volcán de Colima carried out by the centre (gas, springs, thermal, acoustic, doppler radar) by implementing new techniques - Education - provide opportunities for students to visit the natural laboratory provided by Volcán de Colima, learn various field techniques, appreciate some of the problems associated with risk assessment and hazard management and learn how to analyse various types of data But I need your help... There are political issues with the responsibility of the volcano, which straddles the border between two Mexican states, Colima and Jalisco. The funding for our operation is insufficient for the work we carry out and some areas of the work are potentially becoming unsafe for the exchange students and volunteers. Even the smallest donation will have an impact. Many important pieces of equipment require maintenance such as the SO2 camera, used to investigate the emission of gas from the volcano, and an infrared camera, which helps us to understand how magma is being extruded from the volcano and enables the monitoring of fumarole temperatures from a safe distance. The equipment needed to collect this data is very expensive. We are working on the cutting edge of science in many area, therefore the equipment is not mass produced and not as thoroughly tested as products in other areas. Instead, the equipment is often closer to being a prototype and so suffers from a less than perfect reliability. The maintenance costs of the equipment are very high, and funding is needed to cover them. Please read and share our story! It won't take you long to click share and spread the word with your friends! https://www.gofundme.com/736ru4rg
A 2 day field trip consisting of a full day hike around the south of Volcán de Colima, collecting data for spring sample analysis. In addition, another group set-up the Flyspec equipment at La Mesa to measure SO2 flux.
Up to the last few weeks I, along with the CIIV participants here up until around 20 March, were hungry for more activity of Volcán de Colima. How things change! Now I am thankful that the volcano remains quiet. I have nobody to help with the monitoring and have had to empty the flat and give it up. How long this virus will hold the world at bay nobody knows, how long the volcano will remain quiet, nobody knows. Uncertainty can be frustrating, but it keeps life both interesting and challenging. Let's hope CIIV will return in the not too distant future!!!
Here there is a most random list of the the "most dangerous and active volcanoes in the world". It has been based upon recent large Plinian eruptions (Mt. St. H...elens, Pinatubo, Katmai (Novarupta)) or eruptions within the last few years (Agung, Merapi) with the more famous dangerous cases of Vesuvius, Fuji and Mt Rainier included. The concept of repose period was not considered, Yellowstone will be devastating, but the probability of an eruption soon is still extremely low. Interestingly, the article is mainly about Popocatépetl, but it is not on their list. What would you include? See more
Activity remains low at Volcán de Colima - a recent flight revealed that no significant changes have occurred within the crater with similar temperatures being ...registered with the thermal camera as have been recorded during recent months. Subsidence has continued in the central/SW crater floor. See more
