Coral bleaching . What is it? A natural reaction from corals as a response to the changes in their environment. They expel the microscopic algae that live on them, in a symbiotic relationship, making them lose their colors and turn white. .... Why does it happen? For changes in the temperature, light and nutrients. . Why is it important? Corals are living animals, also they help maintain the biodiversity in the planet. When they die or are not healthy, other reef animals, such as sea turtles, fish, crabs, and seabirds face problems. . Can it be solved? Yes, one of the immediate ways of helping is not using chemicals that harm them. When we go into the ocean we can choose clothing with sun protection instead of sunscreen. Meet the Loogerhead turtle! (Caretta caretta) . Is the largest of all hard-shelled turtles, they are named for their massive heads and strong jaws (leatherbacks are bigger but have soft shells). . They are long-lived and could live 70 to 80 years or more. Their weight varies from 80 to 200kgs! And their length goes from 70 -95cm. The max weight registered at the moment is 545 kg, and max length of 213cm! ... . In the southeast coasts of the Gulf of Mexico there’s a big concentration of loggerheads, and they spend most of their lives in the open ocean and in shallow coastal waters so we can see them while we dive! . They are carnivores, so their powerful jaw muscles allow them to crush hard-shelled prey like clams and sea urchins, as well as conchs, bivalves, and horseshoe crabs. They also eat jellyfish, shrimp, sponges, fish, and sometimes even seaweed and sargassum. . . Conoce a la tortuga caguama o cabezona! (Caretta caretta) . Es la tortuga de caparazón duro más grande del mundo. Se la nombra de este modo debido al gran tamaño de su cabeza y sus fuertes mandíbulas. (La tortuga Laúd es más grande pero tiene caparazón blando). . Viven entre 70 80 años, o más. Los adultos tienen un rango de peso medio de 80 a 200 kg y una longitud de 70 a 95 cm. El peso máximo registrado es de 545 kg y la longitud máxima registrada del caparazón es 213 cm. . En la costa sudeste del Golfo de México hay una gran concentración de estas tortugas, las cuales pasan la mayor parte de su vida en el mar y en aguas costeras poco profunda por eso podemos verlas mientras buceamos! . Son carnívoras, por lo que sus poderosos músculos de la mandíbula les permiten aplastar presas de caparazón duro como almejas y erizos de mar, así como caracoles, bivalvos y cangrejos herradura.
