My new book about Joe Chamaco English version. Opinion by Mike Shamos: Who was Joe Chamaco and why am I writing about him? To Americans, Chamaco is known as the... man who burst suddenly into the U.S. National Three-Cushion championship in 1939 and blew away the field of 10 to take the title and the world championship. He remained on the U.S. billiard scene until the 1960s. Chamaco won again Professional World Championship in 1961 that was held in Olavarria Argentina, against Rubin, Vingerhoedt, Procita, Juan and Ezequiel Navarra and won several more events here, and many in other countries. However, his life story was virtually unknown until this year. The book’s main title is Memories of Ivory. I should mention that the book has so many illustrations you shouldn’t have much trouble following it. Chamaco had a particularly fascinating life because of his travels, victories and the famous people in his orbit. The book is a virtual calendar of Chamaco’s life, including elaborate charts of the matches he played, newspaper clippings and over 1400 photos. The level of detail (including his contacts outside billiards) and the huge number of photographs make the book go way beyond anything that has ever been done on any other player. Gallegos’ book is a masterpiece. Not only is it the most extensive biography ever written about a billiard player, it interweaves Chamaco’s professional and private lives together beautifully. Gallegos is careful not to treat his subject as perfect he spends as much time on Chamaco’s losses as on his victories, but at all times the man comes through as amazing for his persistence and accomplishments. Chamaco deserves serious consideration for the Hall of Fame. The biography is over 435 pages long and was published now. It’s available through amazon.com.
